Many people become overwhelmed when confronted with the facts and issues involved in estate planning. This blog series is intended to provide a simple introduction to some of the related concepts and topics involved in estate planning.
Goals: Our goals in offering these materials are simple:
- To demystify these topics by providing simple definitions and examples;
- To provide an organized resource guide you can return to over and over; and
- To acquaint you with these materials sufficiently so that you are prepared to have a fruitful discussion with your attorney.
In our work with families, we have found repeatedly that:
Comprehensive Estate Planning is absolutely one of the most loving things you will ever do.
The Overall Picture
What is your “estate”?
Simply stated, your estate includes everything you own at your death, minus your debts. However, some rather tricky rules apply, which may bring back into the estate assets you are giving away (or thought you would give away).
Your Estate Planning Toolbox
In addition to wills and trusts, there are other essential tools you should consider such as:
- The post-mortem letter to your spouse and survivors
- Living wills
- Life insurance
- Disclaimers
- Lifetime gifts
- Powers of attorney
These tools are each, in turn, discussed during the course of this blog series.
Remember, estate planning is about living and deciding what you want to see happen at different points in your life. Whether you are planning on getting married, buying a home, having children, financing college, or retirement, effective estate planning is designed to attain each of these life level goals; it should be a collaborative, team effort and include your attorney, your tax accountant, and your financial planner with you as the quarterback calling the plays.
